I was listening to a podcast the other day on my way to the gym. Chris Powell the trainer behind the Extreme Makeover TV show was being interviewed and he said something that really struck me. When asked why he thought most people have tried countless diets and weight loss programs and have failed every time he said: “People try and fail countless times because they have no integrity. What does integrity mean? Doing what you say you are going to do. Well when you wake up every Monday and say “today is the day I finally change” but by Tuesday are back to your old ways you lack integrity”
Wow. Hard words to hear. But the more I thought about it the more I agreed with him. So I did what I always do and looked up the definition of the word:
Integrity: Firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values. The quality or state of being undivided. Doing the same as what you say you will do.
Chris Powell admitted that when he said this to his clients reactions were not pretty. Many were insulted, crossed their arms and became defensive. The truth is always hard to hear so I totally understand the reaction. Before you stop reading this post understand that I know there are many reasons why people don’t do what they say they will do: time and money constraints and emotional issues come to mind. But I feel like all of these obstacles can be overcome. We have each been given the strength and spirit to be our best selves no matter what the circumstances.
But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those who love Your name be joyful in You. For You O Lord will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.
Many people who are struggling with losing weight and getting healthy are told to look within themselves for strength. But if they had the strength they would be able to overcome the struggles they have. Truth be told none of us have the strength to overcome on our own. That is where God comes in. He is always there ready to stand by you, fill the gap left by past hurts and disappointments. Love you no matter what, no judgments only love. That kind of support is impossible to get from ourselves, a spouse and friend or a coach. That love and support is only possible with God.
So yes I agree with Chris Powell when he says that a lack of integrity cause people to break promises that they make to themselves and others in regards to weight loss but I also believe that in our quest to find that integrity we need to turn to God and his word to lead us and strengthen us and show us why we lost our integrity to begin with.
